The most poached river in ireland!
A bold statement! Recently a comment on my Facebook page resembled something from a Clint Eastwood film with poacher's firefighting their way out of some distant river valley. Some people scroll through funny videos on Tic Tok or make-believe motivational talks on YouTube, I read about rivers, lochs, lakes, bass, salmon, pike etc etc....
Poached Salmon, River Foyle |
Where is the most poached river in Ireland? It's a tough question, but for some reason I think that the three sisters are at least the most poached rivers in Ireland. The river Suir probably the worst hit one. It's very obvious when you look at the size and the scale of these rivers and their conversation status. All rivers are below their conversation limit, which is very serious, this deems them unfishable at times. Also, when looking at the some of the biggest salmon ever caught in Ireland, these rivers have provided us with huge salmon. Poaching is rampant though and back in august 2020 shots were fired at fishery officers on the river Suir when poachers were caught red handed poaching salmon, let's look at some of the other cases where poachers were caught and sentenced.
- 3rd August 2021, two people convicted and jailed for illegal fishing of salmon on river Barrow.
- 10th March 2021, man charged and fined 300euro for illegal salmon fishing on the river Nore.
- 28th July 2021, Boat, net and salmon seized on river Suir.
- 29th September 2010, man pleaded guilty to illegal fishing of salmon on the river Suir.
- 21st July 2011, two men convicted and fined 2,500euro for illegally drift netting for salmon in the Waterford estuary.
