If you take away the puck, you may as well take away the fair!

If you build the foundation of a house on sand then the house will sink and subside. Tradition means something. Culture means something. Puck fair has been around since the 1600's and it is said that King James granted legal status for the fair. Nobody really knows why a puck is caught in the wilds of Kerry and crowned by the queen of Killorglin to signify the start of the festivities. Many legends are told and heard but this is the one I like to believe. When Oliver Cromwell was raping and pillaging his way through the Irish countryside, its is said that a puck goat broke from his herd and warned the town of the coming army. This way be true or it might not be but one thing I know for certain is that if this tradition has lasted this long then why change it. The main reason is that people believe the fair to be hazardous to the goat. It's not. They believe it is cruel to animals and I can assure you it's not. The national animal rights organisation spokeswoman Laura Broxson was on Newstalk lately and she couldn't even get the name of the town right she said the puck fair was in Listowel. She then went on to describe the puck goat like a domesticated animal which it is not. The puck that gets selected to be the king of Killorglin is treated better than ourselves. He is fed, watered and pampered. It's a fact that when the puck is released back into the Wild he has put on weight and has a shine off him. When that puck goes back into the wild he is the cream of the crop and maybe Puck Fair is the reason we have such a healthy herd here in Kerry.

Puck Fair, Killorglin.

So why all this absolute nonsense from animal rights groups about the king of Killorglin? Why is the most famous puck in Ireland talked about so much? If you live in a world where you will walk past a man on the ground, homeless, drug addicted, lifeless then at least you can whine about a goat being hosted in a town for hundreds of years. It's all virtue signalling and behind is an evil so corrupted that you wouldn't even know it was there. In a world where babies up to six months can be aborted but it's cruel to catch a goat and fatten them up. We have to cover up the stink in our minds and souls. I know i'm a corrupted man but I repent, I have no problem admitting that but if you are on the cover up full time, then isn't it great to show the world you care so much about the well being of a goat. I promise you if the goat was being mistreated and not looked after then I would be the first to try and make it right. I have been to the fair and I just think this needs to be protected. Its tradition. We are slowly eroding away what it means to be Irish. Puck fair is part of that. I know I am an Irish catholic half mad, can't drink raving lunatic at times, but i'm Irish and I will help anyone. Instead of destroying our history maybe learn about it and try to understand. What does it mean to be Irish? Well going to the puck fair was one reason and talking about the king of Killorglin. Loving one another was one also. Today I don't see it. Being Irish is non existent. Such a shame.
